| introducing lulabelle and princess peach... |
[15 Mar 2010|04:13pm] |
we picked up global exotic rescues last night. they are both hedgehogs who had gotten pregnant before or shortly after the raid. so now that their babies are grown and have homes of their own, they get to live at ours. after some paper work and packing them into our backseat (which made me feel a little like i was bring human babies home,) we came back to san antonio.
princess peach is our dainty girl. she's a more standard color, no spots, with a faint raccoon mask. she's shy, but more than happy to pose for a picture. once settled all she wanted to do was sleep so we left her be.

i can already tell that lulabelle, the pinto, is going to be our drama queen. the first thing she did was hiss at me! we got her home and she just refused to come out of her bag to be looked at. she's so big too...she looks like a little spotted cow. :)
she's much bigger than peach, and very brassy i think. once we set her in her new house though she just couldn't stop exploring--EVEN THOUGH WE WERE THERE AND THE LIGHTS WERE ON!
we sat dumbfounded as she ate some kibble, moved all her stuff around, stuck her foot in her water dish, and tried to figure out her wheel. she has obviously never had one, but was feeling brave enough to try it and couldn't get the hang of it just yet...she sort of toddles on it slowly. it's the best thing i have ever seen...

The weather is better.
My entire life since the last post has completely changed; not for the better.
Ithaca is one lesson in detachment after another. after another. after another. after another.

( Scrambles the Deathdealer ) Scrambles came from the Global Exotics seizure of animals in Texas. Here's a link to it www.wfaa.com/news/local/Thousands-of-exotic-animals-seized-in-Arlington-79323622.html. He traveled all the way to VA with a woman named Charity, who found me on the internet and let me know that he was in need of rescue. he annointed himself after the first time i held him. he had kissed my neck for about ten minutes and annointed his right, then his left. he did it again on the way home. we had to drive to northern VA to get him!
he is 4-6 months old and amazing. he's super prickly but his quills will lay flat when he's calm. he's a wheeling, pooping machine. i love him. our house is colder (can't wait til it gets warm out!) so i have to keep a heating pad under half his cage at all times. i check on him constantly. he doesn't like wet food. and he loves to explore. he makes little chuffing noises and sniffing noises constantly. i am smitten.
love, j

| Hedgehog diets? |
[05 Mar 2010|10:42pm] |
New member here, and I was happy to stumble across a hedgie community on Lj!
I'm hoping you guys can help me answer a hedgehog diet question! What do you all feed your hedgies? My own hedgehog sadly died quite young (while I was out of town too, so I have no idea what might have killed him- it may have had nothing to do with his diet, but I'll never know). I'm determined not to get another until I've worked out the best way to care for them, so I can hopefully avoid this happening again!!
What I really want to know is this: I recently spoke to a zoo animal dietician who feels very strongly about feeding animal proteins (such as those contained in cat foods) to insectivores like hedgehogs. She explained how different the nutrients found in insects are from what a typical carnivore would eat, and recommended feeding insectivores actual insects as their main diet instead of substituting carnivore diets. So I'm wondering, has anyone on the community ever tried a complete insect diet? It makes a lot of sense to me, but it doesn't seem like a popular thing to do (maybe just because of the inconvenience?). If not insects, what do you feed instead, and how long do your hedgies generally live?
In addition to wanting more of these guys for myself, I'm studying to be an exotics veterinarian, so I'm trying to collect as much information about exotic pet care as possible, but of course, there aren't many "official" sources of information on many of these animals, so I thought I'd go straight to the owners :).

I've had to tighten the budgeting belt lately, and that means that so has my precious pinto, Wesley. The bedding I was using for him was a little more high end than we can do, now, and my sister (who has a hamster) recommended this stuff called "Healthy Pet". It looks like a paper product of some sort, maybe chunks of paper pulp? Anyway, my question is does anyone know of this bedding and if it's safe for hedgies? I'm worried that the little bit of powder that comes off it might bother his respiratory system. Does anyone use it or at least know whether it's safe to use? Wesley and I thank you!
